In this article I will talk about the school.
This article it’s also the continuation of my speech about the pions “week 6”.
It’s written in the law that the French student should study until 16 years old. So because of this reason, schools in France are free under the 16years old grade. The government pays the teachers. It also means that we do not consider that a school is better than an other one. This is just the “official” version. But of course, in the reality it’s quite different.
The students are considered like responsible and young adults.
We do not have our own classroom. So we always carry our daily books and our school bag with us. And for this reason, our “principal” teacher don’t have a relation like parents/son with us.
In my school, the class start at 8 until 12. We have 15min to take a rest between 10 and 11. The lunch time is during around 2 hours. Then at 2 to 4 class. Then 20 min rest and we finish the day at 5 or 6, sometimes at 7. It depends the day.
[make a graphic]
Sometimes our schedule has a hole inside. We call it “trou”. So it can happens that 3 to 4 we do not have class. So what happens? We do not have our own classroom. So the French schools have a place called “I FORGOT” specially build for the students. There is always a small bar, many tables and sits. We can listen music, or watch tv. Some schools have pool and “minifoot” [table soccer]. This place is made to relax ourselves so. Last year I usually plays cards there. Some classrooms are also open if we wants a very quiet atmosphere to study.
But the French students are more free than Taiwanese.
We do not have guards. And the doors are always open. So if we want to go outside to buy something, or to go to eat or drink in a bar during those “trous” we can. Nobody will stop us.
My French school have like a park/small forest besides. So many students between 12 and 2 go there to relax, play ball or just escape the school. Because there, there is no “pions”. So it’s also a perfect place where the students like to drink and smoke. But this topic is well developed in the article 3.
The mind. We do have a big test. But the students don’t really Take care. I mean of course they Take care, but compare to Taiwan. It’s nothing!
The pressure. The Asian way of learning came form Confucius teaching. You always study, study and study all the time. Everyday someone will check with tests if you learned more. There is no innocence in your tutorial system. I feel you are like robots, or goose. Just here to be “food-forced” by your teachers. And the teachers the same. They have to teach you many many things in few time.
You spend many time in school. And are verry worried about thoses tests. The French way will bad consider thoses test. Because we consider that school is not the only place to have an education.
And I think Taiwan is wrong. The students spend too much time in school to learn. Because stay 2hours in class is it really learning? Where is the creativity? As teenagers we need free time to think. To have ideas, to discuss. To relax. Certes you spend many time leaning. But does it means that you really leanr something. Don’t the life can teach you lessons that school can not? Students are not robots, teachers neither.
I have a lot on interest in cognitive search, about the barin and everything. But my classmates are not so very “concerned” about a subject to taught in school. But with my French classmates I can draw a map of abilities.
An other truly difference. We do not wear uniform, and do not have “police” inside the school. My feeling is more like nowadays Taiwan schools are jails. You are forced to learn. The good way will be that you came to school because you want to learn, not because you have to. That’s why I really feel your school as jails. Just look the grillage, is it oriented that no one can enter or just no one can go outside?
But a great point in Taiwan it’s because the students have to clean their environment. In France we just have professional who clean for us. We do not think that it’s a student’s duty to clean. They just have to respect and do not put more dust. Is it a Confucius ideas? But I still don’t really share the common version that you have to clean to respect. It’s a part of learning ok. But why the teachers and generally adults don’t have to clean? If everybody clean, I wil really feel that France have to learn from Taiwan. But I should admit that others reasons came to me first. It’s more economic, and also a way to make the difference between who “knows” and who have to be kind of slave, kind of “learning beggar”. So it’s really a great point. But not totally true.
No morning celebration, no flag salute. No military class. But this will be developed in an article called “Does France love me?”.
